A bacterial infection of the epiglottis, often caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), causing severe throat swelling and breathing difficulty. WHO states that epiglottitis is a medical emergency, treatable with antibiotics and airway management, preventable with Hib vaccine.
