Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) for migraines is an evidence-based, neuroscience treatment that retrains the brain to process pain signals differently, reducing migraine frequency and intensity without medication. Developed from pain neuroscience research, PRT addresses the neurological pathways that amplify and sustain chronic migraine pain.
Key Facts:
Migraines are neurological disorders characterized by severe, throbbing head pain lasting 4-72 hours. Unlike typical tension headaches, migraines involve complex brain chemistry changes and neurological symptoms.

PRT is integrated with:
Cognitive behavioural therapy is what most people with chronic pain are offered first, and it works by helping you challenge unhelpful thoughts about the pain.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy starts from a different place. Rather than disputing the thought, it works on the brain’s judgement of whether the sensation is actually dangerous. Somatic tracking asks you to watch a sensation calmly, without bracing against it, until the alarm response settles.
Dr. Vaid pairs PRT with Motivational Interviewing, which draws out your own reasons for testing a belief instead of telling you the belief is wrong.
She does not provide CBT in-house. If CBT is what you are looking for, or a clinician has recommended it, she can refer you to a provider who does.

Quick answer: Very little, and you should know that before starting. PRT’s randomised evidence is in chronic back pain (PubMed). For migraine there is a single 2025 published case series of three people with chronic migraine who had not responded to standard preventive and acute treatment; all three had large reductions in headache days (PubMed). The authors note that PRT had not previously been studied for migraine at all.
Three cases is a signal worth following, not evidence that this works for migraine generally. PRT here is something to try alongside your existing migraine care, not a replacement for it.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an innovative, neuroscience-backed approach to treating chronic migraine pain by retraining the brain’s response to pain signals. Unlike traditional treatments that focus on symptom relief, PRT addresses the root cause—how the brain perceives and processes pain, leading to lasting migraine relief without medication.
PRT is backed by research in pain neuroscience, particularly studies showing that chronic pain can be "learned" and reinforced by the brain. Recent clinical trials, including those on neuroplasticity and mind-body pain therapy, indicate that reprocessing pain through structured therapy can lead to significant and lasting pain reduction, especially in chronic conditions like migraines and tension headaches.
PRT is ideal for individuals who:
es! Pain Reprocessing Therapy has been effective for a variety of headache conditions, including:
PRT helps all these conditions by teaching the brain to reduce pain amplification and reactivity.
PRT is a safe, non-invasive therapy with no physical side effects. However, some clients may experience temporary emotional resistance as they reframe their understanding of pain. This is a natural part of the healing process, as the brain unlearns conditioned pain responses.
